Stay In Great Shape While You're At Home

I know I've been quiet for a while but that's due to some technical issues; which hopefully is a thing of the past.

I've been trying to work out and stay fit during this Corona Virus lockdown because I don't want to end up with excess weight after all this is over. I've been at home since before it was mandatory and all I had been doing is stuffing my face and planting my butt on the sofa. Now my pants are already a tad small, yikes!

No more of that...

Today I'm giving you some suggestions on how to stay in shape during lockdown based on what I have been doing and I actually enjoy. The majority of these will require large amounts of data if you use the apps, so you'll probably need wifi access to d them but there are a few things you can do using nothing but your body, no equipment needed.

Workouts you can do at home:


Grab your skipping rope and head outside. Skipping is a great way to burn those calories. My coach back in the day advised the team to do 200 skips a day to stay fit.

It really gets the heart pumping!

Tae - bo

I love doing Billy Blanks' TaeBo in the living room via YouTube at home. It's my go-to when I feel like working out and is a great way to really work up a sweat.

You can choose the length of the workout you want on his channel. I usually do the 8-minute workout when I'm not really in the mood for a long session.


I've recently discovered PopSugar Fitness which is a YouTube channel filled with fun workouts for you do in the comfort of your home. I've been enjoying their HIIT workouts. I just did one first thing this morning and it was both challenging and fun. I reply enjoyed it.

HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training which cardio exercise and is a form of interval training where you do bursts of intense exercise with less-intense recovery periods, for example, running in place as fast as you can for 40 seconds with 20 seconds rest before you run again as fast as you can.

Below is a suggestion of moves you can do which are included in the HIIT program but you can just do them yourself without necessarily being guided:

Planks (see image above)

Try different variations such as the plank hold, plank taps (hold plank position while doing alternate shoulder taps), plank jacks (jumping jacks in out leg movement while holding the plank position) or spiderman planks among others. Search the net or Pinterest for other ideas.

Squats ( see image to the left)

Stand with feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart with your toes facing forward. Push your hips back like you're gonna sit, bending at the knees and push your butt into the floor (not actually touching the floor). Your weight should be on your heels, not your toes. Come up and repeat the movement.

Always exercise with your stomach pulled in.

Your weight should not be on your toes and your chest should be up with your head facing straight in front of you.

Variations include jump squats and side-step squats.

I have apps on my phone with different workouts that I make use of when I get bored with the workouts on YouTube because I don't like doing the same thing over and over again. Here are the apps that I am currently using that you can download for workouts:

By the way, the above-mentioned apps are free to download from the app store.

It's to have the important correct posture and do the exercises correctly for them to be effective and to avoid injury; which is I like guided videos. They also give suggestions on different variations of the moves if they are too difficult for you to do.

Lockdown is the perfect time to get working on that dream body and with all this time on our hands now; there really is no excuse. Like I mentioned previously; when I'm not feeling up to working out, I do a short 8-minute TaeBo workout and that's my gym session for the day done! It may sound like it's not much at all but just give it a try and see for yourself what a good workout it is.

My sister recently introduced me to Chloe Ting on YouTube. I've been doing her challenge to get into shape during the lockdown and her routines are so much fun. I would definitely recommend taking part. I enjoy how challenging I find the workout sessions.

There are tons of other exercises you can do at home that I haven't mentioned in this article. You just gotta find a physical activity that you enjoy doing that can also be done indoors. Play sports in the yard with your kids and family for example. It's great for family bonding.

Since I haven't provided any images of the exercises please look them up if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Most importantly drink plenty of water and follow a healthy diet containing plenty of fruits and veggies.

Lastly, I would just like to say that the Corona Virus is no joke. Can everyone please treat it seriously and actually stay indoors unless you really have to leave your home. Please wear your masks in public to protect yourself and everyone else.
