Not so long ago I'm sure many South Africans didn't think Corona Virus was "our problem". I think it was just last week when I came across a video circulating of people having a good time at the club doing the "Corona dance"; now it's here. Not so funny anymore, is it? Not that it ever was...

The first case of the virus in my hometown of East London, South Africa was someone at the Regent Hotel on the beachfront. Now I didn't hear this from a reliable news source but if people are now spreading fake news then that's fucked up!

I was supposed to attend my sister's graduation in Cape Town later this week but as of yesterday the president who I must say was quiet for the longest time, has declared a national state of disaster and imposed travel bans. My sister's school has also canceled the graduation as large gathering s are high risk.

I never thought this virus would reach so close to home because nothing this grave ever happens around here but this time it's different. East London is so small, this thing could spread like wildfire.

Old people and people with medical conditions like asthma, heart disease, etc. are more vulnerable to the virus.

What exactly is Corona Virus?

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses causing illnesses that range from a common cold to more severe diseases. COVID-19 is a new strain that emerged last year in China.

How is Corona spread?

Corona is spread through contact with an infected person that's coughing and sneezing and coming into contact with surfaces that have been touched by an infected person.

What are the symptoms of Corona?

If you experience any of the following, please seek medical attention:

  • difficulty breathing

  • coughing

  • sore throat

  • runny nose

  • fever

  • shortness of breath

  • fatigue

  • aches and pains

Here's how you can keep yourself and loved ones safe from Corona infection:

  • always wash your hands, use hands sanitizer if you can't wash them

  • avoid close contact with anyone showing flu symptoms

  • always cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing

  • cook meat and eggs thoroughly

  • wear a mask especially when going out in public

If you suspect you may have Corona or you've come in contact with someone else that you suspect is infected, please contact your doctor and try to isolate yourself so that you don't infect others around you.

As this is a new illness, there is currently no vaccine to treat or protect us from it so the best we can do is to prevent the virus from spreading.

Let's all do our part to stop the spread of this virus. We have also been told to avoid large gatherings.

I'm not gonna lie; I'm SCARED!

Check ya later & keep safe!
